Can anyone give a better explanation of the function that these options serve? What I read in the HTML Help document wasn't exactly illuminating.

The main idea of trade bot is to buy something then sell it at the same station with profit. If difference between buy and sell order prices is good, you have better chance to make profit. If difference is not so good, you may purchase something but will not be able to sell for higher price because of price fluctuations during a day or two. This filter will not allow to purchase or sell your items if profit became minimal and you have a chance to loose money to buy something for expensive price or sell something for cheap. Of cause to be able to use this filter you should have popular item where several buy and sell orders exist. Otherwise bot will not be able to calculate profit. Also you should use in-station range or orders (group boxes above) because profit may be negative if you compare regional prices, but it is not when you trade in the same station.

So it will automatically place buy/sell orders?

From my understand and reading the FAQ, It will scan the Market, in either Station/System/Region. Then purchase items that are cheap and resell for a higher price earning you tons of profit. It will avoid any items that will only fetch minimal profit and avoid those that would make you break even. IT can also set up auctions and undercut people 0.01 automatically. As with traveling and selling for higher prices at different stations.

TL;DR

Its a business man, buys cheap, resells high. And can create auctions on anything you don't want to sell right away and keep them updated to be the best choice. All with earning you the most money.

I think you may have missed the mark a little here. Tradebot works with orders that are set up by the user. I'm quite sure that it does not scan the market and automatically place buy orders... yet
